comedian steve "copscotch" seagren remembers ...
now that dan kaufman is no longer with us i think its time i told the story of dan kaufman and me...
the year was 1970 nixon was still in office the vietnam war was still going on and a young midwife named copscotch was helping to deliver a child to the kaufman family in chicago. though the baby was born without complication (thanks to my help), i had to admit it was the first time i had delivered a child into this world that was already wearing glasses. the new parents were stunned. they were a superstitious couple. they feared that glasses were a bad omen. they gave the child to me.
i named him dan and left him in a cornfield near kenosha, wisconsin.
as the years went by i followed his development from afar. i watched him grow to manhood. in 1995 he found his way out the cornfield and became a comic only to die penniless and alone in cheap ymca hotel room in lockport, ill.
when i heard the news i started to blame myself. i remembered the brief time we spent together. i remembered how i helped bring him into the world... then i stopped myself and thought, "hey it's not my fault what's for breakfast?"
epilogue
dan kaufman's bullet ridden body not only got up and walked out of the city morgue yesterday it also did a killer 10 minutes for the stunned staff at the county coroners office. is there nothing that can stop this monster? superman where are you?
